Edward Eremugo Kenyi was born in Juba, South Sudan, and completed his high school at the Comboni Secondary School in 1992. He graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Juba in 1999 and worked as a physician in Darfur and Khartoum before specializing in public health at the University of Heidelberg in Germany in 2007.
He also worked in South Sudan, participating in various primary healthcare programs with Management Sciences for Health and Jhpiego from 2010 to 2015.
Dr. Kenyi was a fellow of the prestigious United States Department of State Hubert Humphrey Fellowship program, which he completed in 2016 at the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
His interest in writing began at a young age as he contributed to the local school news board. In 1993, he attended a creative writers’ workshop at the British Council in Khartoum facilitated by renowned South Sudanese writer/poet Taban Lo Liyong, which reignited his passion for writing. Later, in Khartoum, he volunteered as a literary editor for the Sudan Council of Churches Women’s Newspaper called Arise, where most of his short stories and articles were published.
However, the pressures of medical practice kept him out of the literary scene for many years until he moved to online publishing. Since then, his short stories have been published in several online journals, including Author-me.com, the Kalahari Review, and Warscapes. His stories were also featured in two anthologies.
Since then, he has attended several other creative writing courses and hopes to start an MFA.
His short story collection Sacrifice and Other Short Stories was published in July 2020 by Africa World Books (Australia). He is currently working on several projects at different stages of development.
Dr. Kenyi currently works with Jhpiego, an affiliate of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland (USA). He lives with his wife, Dr. Poni Mori (Dentist).
